JNR Spotlight: Memorial Day

What is Memorial Day?

A National Holiday weekend, the unofficial beginning of summer, an opportunity to go on a short vacation, watch a community parade, attend a sports event, or a backyard barbecue with family and friends.  A time to enjoy the simple pleasures and freedoms of life in America.

Memorial Day is the day we remember all those brave men and women who have sacrificed to protect our liberties and our lives so that we could be safe from harm.

No matter how you’re celebrating, we hope you’ll take a moment on Monday, to reflect and honor the brave fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, children and friends who fought and died for our freedom.

Share with the young the importance of remembering those who have sacrificed so much in service to our county. It is their sacrifices that have protected and defended all of the freedoms and privileges we enjoy as American citizens.

On Memorial Day, let us all hope for peace — not only for ourselves, but for all those who seek freedom and justice.

We wish you and your loved ones a long, wonderful holiday weekend.

The Virgin Islands: Which Island Suits You?

The Virgin Islands are located in the heart of the Caribbean. People from all over the world travel here for their superb beaches and breathtaking ocean views. Passports are not required for Americans to reach this scenic destination, although it is recommended for easier travel. There are three main islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands, all with exquisite features.  Which island best fits your desires for a nice getaway?

  • St. John

This island is the smallest of the three and consists of 75% National Park land. St. John matches the British Virgin Isles in tranquility and is a nature lover’s paradise. It is the least developed island with bumpy roads and only a handful of stores. The beautiful surroundings are calming and peaceful creating a relaxing atmosphere for all visitors. St. Johns holds numerous festivals throughout the year ranging from bike and boat races to live music shows. If you are looking for a soothing vacation away from a busy city life then this is the place for you.

  • St. Thomas

With an endless amount of activities on this island you are bound to be entertained. It is home to Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Full of excitement and adventure, St. Thomas offers shopping, sightseeing, snorkeling, dining and much more. This Island has the oldest synagogue in use in the U.S. today and contains the oldest building in the Virgin Islands. If you love history and culture then this island is the perfect spot.

  • St. Croix

From its diverse landscape to its calm and relaxing beaches, St. Croix is the largest and most popular destination in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The strong Danish influence of towns Christiansted and Frederiksted create a laid-back experience for tourists. Every two years at Buck Islands Reef on St. Croix visitors have a chance to spot the endangered Hawksbill turtles that grow up to three feet long and over 200 pounds. This island offers endless underwater opportunities and sets the scene for a true tropical delight. After exploring this magnificent location you will not walk away disappointed.

These three islands offer a variety of leisure, so the perfect fit for you is inevitable. Every spot is absolutely beautiful and leaves a lifelong impression. The soft sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, swaying palms and warm breezy weather make the U.S. Virgin Islands the perfect vacation spot for anyone looking for some fun in the sun.

JNR Spotlight: Brain Foods for Meetings

Not only should foods be wholesome and nutritious in everyday life, but when it comes to feeding the crowds at a meeting or conference they should also boost concentration and learning ability. This category of food has been labeled “Brain Food” and is used to improve mood, motivation and intellectual performance.

When learning is an important aspect of an event, maintaining steady blood sugar levels through complex carbohydrates and consumption of foods with low glycemic indexes can improve concentration and ultimately, ROI of the meeting.

“Brain Foods” improve brain function and increase alertness.  What we find though is foods that are traditionally served by caterers produce chemicals in the body that make participants unfocused and tired and should be avoided.

So what should you be serving at your next meeting to get the most out of your participants and see a higher ROI?

Breakfast:

  • Avoid sugary foods and those made with white flour such as doughnuts, Danishes and bagels (unless it is whole grain).
  • Offer meal options that are high in fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates and whole grains.
  • Fresh juices, antioxidant yogurt bars, hard-boiled eggs and cereals are great options.

Lunch:

  • Avoid meats that produce tryptophan in the brain, such as red meats and turkey.
  • Try to stay away from highly processed foods and replace them with fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid fatty foods that require more energy to break down. Ever felt tired or had a “food coma” after a big meal? This could be due to your body using a large amount of energy to break down the fat in the foods you just consumed.
  • Offer smaller options with proteins such as chicken and fish over a bed of quinoa, brown rice or whole-grain pasta.

Dinner:

  • Most of the day’s learnings will have been achieved by dinner so this is a meal where participants can enjoy traditional options including red meats.
  • Smaller portions are still a good option.

Snacks:

The following list was compiled by The National Conference Center and released in their paper The Science of Food for Thoughts: Enhancing Meetings Through Food.

  • H2O
  • Granola
  • Nuts
  • Blueberries
  • Yogurt
  • Mangoes
  • Bananas
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Whole Grain Breads
  • Hard-boiled Eggs
  • Peanut Butter
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Energy Bars

It is easy to see the benefit that a healthy and nutritious menu can have on participant experiences at meetings and conferences.  With hotels such as Omni Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and Westin Hotels & Resorts introducing “Brain Food” options to their catering menus, the change can be easy.

If you would like to learn more about how you can increase the ROI of your meetings and conference through the introduction of “Brain Foods” please contact JNR. We would love to set up a time to talk about your organization’s needs. Give us a call at 800.343.4546, or email us at jnrinfo@jnrcorp.com.

JNR Spotlight: North American Meetings Industry Day – April 16

JNR joins our fellow industry leaders to support the first North American Meetings Industry Day (NAMID) on April 16, 2015.  This nationwide day of advocacy, lead strongly by the Meetings Mean Business coalition, will spotlight the substantial value derived from business meetings, conferences, conventions, incentive travel, trade shows and exhibitions, and will engage with policymakers, industry elites and business leaders.

Those of us entrenched in the industry know that meetings and events play a critical role connecting people and driving positive business results.

·         Creating Personal Connections Face to Face – Personal relationships are at the core of every business decision and face-to-face meetings provide professionals with that personal interaction, which leads to deeper relationships and collaboration. When people meet face-to-face, relationships are developed in a way that technology cannot recreate or match. The ability to look a new business opportunity in the eye and close the deal with a handshake simply cannot be replicated.

·         Driving Positive Business Outcomes – Meetings and events deliver profits, help win new accounts, serve as education platforms and allow colleagues and partners to come together to innovate and achieve results. Meetings create a shared sense of purpose, foster empathy across organizational lines and create camaraderie that positions an organization for success.

·         Building Strong Communities – In addition to the results driven by business meetings including advanced skills and workplace training, the events and meetings industry creates hundreds of thousands of jobs, generates billions of dollars of revenue and supports communities across the North America.

Did you know that the Travel Industry is a Significant Driver of Economic Growth and Jobs?

·         The meetings industry contributes more to U.S. national GDP than the air transportation, motion picture, sound recording, performing arts and spectator sport industries. It is an economic engine, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, generating billions of dollars in revenue and supporting communities across the country.

·         According to a study by PwC, the meetings industry contributed more than $280 billion to the U.S. national economy and put another $88 billion back into the economy through federal, state and local taxes in 2012.

·         A driver of job growth, meetings increased employment even during the economic downturn.  In 2012, meetings employed nearly 1.8 million people and generated $234.6 billion in total labor income.

We want you to know that JNR is actively involved in Industry Advocacy groups that support your right to meet and reward customers, employees, stakeholders, consultants, sales team members and all other types of program participants.

JNR Spotlight: Beverly Laing Golf Tournament, 5K and Wellness Day

128 people from all aspects of the hospitality industry, close family and friends joined together to celebrate a day of wellness in honor of Beverly Laing, MPI President, who left us suddenly last November.  The event was held on Monday, March 23, at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park and organized by the MPI Southern California Chapter (MPISCC), where Beverly previously served on the Board of Directors before becoming President, and American Golf Corporation.

The day kicked off with a 5K Walk/Run where participants could enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery, followed by a Skills Challenge, Putting Contest and Golf Clinic for the 69 golfers in the group.  A bountiful BBQ lunch followed the morning challenges to provide the energy for the fun and educational afternoon activities.

The golf enthusiasts took part in a fabulous golf tournament that finished at the sponsored bar. JNR sponsored the 7th hole in honor of Beverly’s association and time spent at JNR Incorporated where she was a Senior Account Manager.

The “non-golfers” headed to a range of wellness seminars and exercise classes. There was something for everyone with classes that included Fitness is Simple – What, Why and How of getting and staying healthy, Living a Balanced Life – an exploration of your unique mind/body personality types, Yoga on the Green and the “Insanity” Workout.

The flawless day was capped off with a beautiful sunset networking reception followed by dinner and awards.  Funds raised from this wonderful event went towards the MPI Foundation Education Endowment, which in turn comes back to the chapter for educational programming.

Beverly, you are missed by all at JNR.
