Bringing a CSR Element to Your Incentive

Last month Points of Light Foundation encouraged people to share their stories for National Volunteer Week.  This week was dedicated to recognizing those that volunteer their time and resources to better others in communities near and far.  Support poured in from the President, Congress, Leaders and community groups across the country.  At JNR we see first hand the impact that service projects have, not only on the recipients, but also on the volunteers themselves.

Incorporating a Community Service element into an Incentive program is a wonderful way to give back to the community that hosts your once-in-a-lifetime event. Although these Incentives are a time to celebrate the hard work of your top achievers, we have found that to give people the opportunity to spend a day bettering the lives of others further enhances the overall experience.

Corporate social responsibility, also known as CSR, refers to a business practice that involves activities that benefit a segment of society. Meet Your Way to Fitness

Health and fitness is emphasized now more than ever before. With the abundance of processed food and stationary jobs, it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle to counteract the effects of the environments we live and work in. Lack of time is one of the biggest obstacles the working population faces when it comes to fitness, especially when employees are traveling for business several times a year. It can be very difficult to find an effective wellness routine when you are on the road. Luckily, many companies and meeting planners understand this struggle and are beginning to incorporate health and fitness into the business travel work environment.  Studies show that a healthy workforce is equivalent to increased profitability and productivity.  In addition, your organization will see a high-performance staff with minimal healthcare costs- all positive factors to your bottom line.

Below are some ideas to help keep your employees and attendees healthy and active while on-site.

Provide healthy food options

A healthy diet is the key to any wellness routine. However, while traveling and working, we may find ourselves making less than healthy choices. This is why it is important to provide well-balanced meal options for attendees. According to nutritionist Kasey Brixius, in order to maintain energy and focus during meetings, it is essential to include lean protein, quality carbohydrates and healthy fats in every meal and snack. An easy way to do this is to provide build-your-own-meal stations that cater to different preferences. The breakfast stations can include a build-your-own yogurt parfait, while a salad bar is a great option for lunch or dinner.

Incorporate fitness activities

Fitness classes are a fun and unique way to keep attendees active. The Spa at JW Marriott Chicago recently announced the hotel’s first wellness program, “Fit Meetings,” which is actually tailored for meeting and events. Fit Meetings includes 3 breakout “meeting enhancements” which include meditation, strength training, and yoga based stretching sessions. For those who want to take their fitness to the next level, the program offers private wellness classes including scenic runs, fitness orientations and nutrition courses. If your program does not allow the time to include classes like these, even allotting for small breaks of aerobic activity will help energize the brain and the body.

Choose an active location

Choosing an active location is an easy way to keep attendees on their feet. According to Carolyn Blackburn, there are several fitness options throughout the Pacific Northwest. Portland, Oregon provides hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. Portland is also the home of Forest Park, containing over 80 miles of trails. “Meeting attendees love its paved trails for a quick walk or bike ride,” says regional communications manager for Travel Portland, Alacia Lauer. Another fitness friendly location is Seattle, Washington. “Wellness is part of Seattle’s core,” says Kelly Sailing, Director of Convention Services at Visit Seattle. Seattle’s Convention Center is home to several healthy eateries, making it easy for attendees to pick up a quick nutritious bite to eat while on the road.

On April 14, 2016, they will join forces with the advocacy coalition Meetings Mean Business (MMB) to showcase the real impact that business meetings, conferences, conventions, Incentive Travel, trade shows and exhibitions have on people, business and communities.

Proclamations of support were issued by the governor of Wisconsin and mayors of Toronto, Buffalo and Washington, DC. A NAMID billboard was featured all day in Times Square and Caesars Entertainment “Turned the Strip Blue” in Las Vegas with NAMID logos and signage. In Mexico, a collaboration agreement was signed between the federal government, the tourism board and all 11 Meetings Industry Associations.
