Employee Incentives at JNR

Working with an incentive travel company you may imagine that JNR employees get the opportunity for luxurious jet setting to remote locations while receiving perks from fabulous hotels and travel vendors. We however, are the ones working behind the scenes planning, negotiating and operating those programs to ensure our clients experience the trip of a lifetime that will have lasting effects of sustained motivation amongst their employees. For those of us left in the office, JNR does give employees several other opportunities to feel incentivized, appreciated and connected to the company culture.

In today’s age of millennial workers, the need to feel appreciated and socially engaged is more important than ever. Work life balance is one of the most sought after perks of a job in today’s culture. Paid time off and a generous 401K plan is not enough to make an employee feel like a valued member of a team. There are several other ways to keep employees feeling appreciated, engaged in their work and loyal to their employers.

Here are three ways JNR incentivizes our employees:

  1. Pre-paid debit cards

At the end of each quarter, JNR employees who receive a “Caught in the Act” recognition from their peers or managers will receive a bonus of $25.00 each on their personalized prepaid debit card. A “Caught in the Act” recognizes an employee for several acts of service. From going above and beyond what is asked, staying late to get the job done or taking on a big project proactively. This is an excellent example of not only verbally praising employees for a job well done, but also giving them an extra monetary incentive to keep up the good work.

  1. In-office parties and celebrations

At JNR you can have your cake and eat it too! What better way to extended appreciation to our employees than with in-office celebrations and catered events. JNR plans monthly birthday celebrations as well as fun national holidays and everything in between. From the March birthday celebration that honored national Mario Cart Day, to our summer office Olympic events, office festivities give employees the opportunity to take a break from their desk and come socialize, play a game and enjoy sweet treats in camaraderie with their coworkers.

  1. Referral program

When current employees refer a friend or acquaintance to JNR for an open position they are rewarded monetarily if the candidate is a good fit. The employee who refers the candidate will receive $50.00 on their JNR reward card after 90 days, and $250.00 after they complete their first year with the company. This is a great way to encourage familiar referrals and maintains the integrity of the applicants.

These perks are just a few little ways that JNR makes employees feel like they are part of a collaborative team. Incentives like these guarantee higher retention rates which is most cost efficient for the company.  When employees feel valued it is directly reflected in company moral. At JNR it is easy to discover the difference in our employees, our work and our service. Contact us today if you are interested in pursuing an employee engagement program for your organization.

Incentive Travel Spotlight: The Allure of a Pura Vida Incentive

What is it about the glamour that seems to be built into the words ‘Costa Rica’?  This country nestled at the base of Central America between Nicaragua and Panama, bordered by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, elicits feelings of mystery and exclusivity to most travellers on an Incentive Travel escape.  For the most part, these well-travelled individuals have explored the likes of Mexico, Hawaii and islands within the Caribbean, but making the journey just a bit further south is unchartered territory.  The draw of a Pura Vida lifestyle is instantly appealing and motivating making it a perfect destination choice for companies choosing an Incentive Travel location.

Aside from a year-round tropical climate, Costa Rica shares little else with her Central American neighbors.  One of the most stable and prosperous economies in Latin America makes for a very safe excursion.  This coupled with the reassurance of Resort brands like Four Seasons, Marriott and Westin, travellers are met with a sense of well-being and comfort that is not always guaranteed when traveling throughout the region.

What other mysteries does this country hold?  To start, 25% of the land is dedicated to conservation and protected National Parks.  Costa Rica is a land of extreme natural beauty.  With a priority placed on the commitment to preservation, visitors will forever be in awe of the lush green forests, pristine waterfalls and a plethora of unique animals like sloths, monkeys and over 50 species of hummingbirds.  Our travel programs always include local flowers in guest rooms, activities that bring our participants a first hand experience with Costa Rica’s natural surroundings and even fresh fish from the local waters caught and cooked in time for dinner.

When looking for things to do zip lining is synonymous with the Costa Rican landscape and a must do on all Incentive Travel programs.  The canopy of the jungle becomes your playground as you fly from platform to platform on tours ranging from 50 to 800 meters in length.  Tarzan swings, waterfall hikes and superman cables are just a few of the options you’ll be faced with as you take on this extraordinary adventure.  These aerial tours test your bravery as you soar through the skies getting a true birds eye perspective of this beautiful country.

One of greatest features of Costa Rica is its variety. With only a short amount of time spent driving across a country smaller than Lake Michigan visitors can experience volcanoes, rainforest, beaches, national parks, cloud forests and hot springs.  Over 800 miles of coastline give tourists plenty of beach space for a fun in the sun getaway and with water temperatures in the 80’s, there is no excuse for visitors not to dive in.  We tend to stay on the Caribbean side of the country but the beauty of this excursion is that you can see it all in a very short amount of time.

With Pura Vida at its core, it is no surprise that Costa Rica ranks at the top of the Happy Planet Index.  Taking into consideration factors such as life expectancy, overall well-being and a highly favorable ecological footprint score, Costa Rica has some of the happiest people on the planet.  The pride for the country is so evident that it can even be heard each morning at 7am when every radio station plays Noble patria, tu hermosa bandera (Noble homeland, your beautiful flag)- the national anthem for Ticos and Ticas to sing along with as they start their day.

If you would like more information on how your sales organization can motivate with “the Pure Life” experience please contact JNR.  We would love to set up a travel incentive program custom tailored to your organization’s needs.  Give us a call at 800.343.4546, or email us at jnrinfo@jnrcorp.com.

JNR Spotlight: To Stair-Step or Not to Stair-Step

Tiered or “Stair-Step” programs are a common incentive structure, awarding individuals or businesses with increased per unit payouts as they reach certain thresholds of sales production.  Makes sense, right?  Sell more, get more – the ultimate in pay for performance.  For example, sell 1 to 10 widgets, earn $5 per unit.  Selling 11 to 20 widgets and earn $10 per unit.  For selling 21 to 30 widgets, earn $15 for each widget sold.  Other elements can also be incorporated into the program, including fast-start bonuses, making structures more complex.

The stakes get high when the program is retroactive, meaning the $5 that you get from selling widgets 1 through 10 becomes $15 per unit from widget one – when you reach the target bonus  threshold.  Wow, a lot of money is on the table at the end of the program as participants strive to hit that top tier.  Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

These programs can be quite controversial however, especially in industries such as automotive where Stair-Step programs can actually create an unequal playing field between large and small dealers – if the program structure is too general for all dealers in the network.  The larger volume dealers may use their forecasted Stair-Step dollars to arbitrarily offer discounts to customers.  Large dealers always set the market price.  With Stair-Step programs, they can control and manipulate market pricing with little to no price competition from the smaller dealers.  Large dealers increase volume; smaller dealers struggle to be profitable.  This can also cause an eroded customer experience.

Smaller dealers are forced to make a decision: do they take a gamble and match market pricing of the larger dealers, betting that they will reach their Stair-Step objective and come out of the program profitable.  That can be a big risk for dealers in a small market who have limited potential.  This is why the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has taken such a strong position against Stair-Step incentives as they can negatively affect a large portion of their membership base.

So what is a manufacturer to do?  They want to drive volume, especially in cases with excess inventory, need to move certain models or need to drive market share.  They must take care of their top dealers and if mid to small dealers can reach set thresholds, they win too.  However, in too many instances smaller dealers can take a hit directly to their bottom line.

So manufacturers should and do care.  They are taking action with different incentive structures that include:

–          Periodic Bonus – disrupts the month-end discount push, but forward thinking large dealers will eventually adjust their annual strategies to a monthly projection in order to set market price.

–          Groupings – set specific attainable tiers, by dealer or groupings of similar sized dealers, based on historical volume.  Gives dealers of all sizes more of a comfort level in reaching their objectives.  However, can still put discounting power in the hands of the larger dealers.

–          Non-Cash Incentives – take away the cash element and give dealers trips, experiences, merchandise, rewards to disburse to their teams, etc.  This is quite effective in engaging dealers to motivate their teams to exhibit the right behaviors everyday to drive sales and achieve quota.  Some dealers can, however, use cash-based discounting to drive sales in contest periods in order to achieve the award objectives.

While popularity and implementation of Stair-Step programs ebbs and flows with the economy, they will be utilized by sponsoring companies in some form or another for the foreseeable future.  With advances in program structure, analytics and past experience, companies will be tasked with designing programs that will` generate their desired effect.  That means recognizing clout of your top performers and maximizing potential of the middle group through strategic design and engagement.

As an incentive marketing company we support our clients’ incentive initiatives with a variety of tools to engage, motivate and reward their target audience(s) for achieving and exceeding their goals and objectives.  Fundamentally, for programs to be effective and successful, the following incentive principles should be adhered to:

–          Is the program attainable?

–          Can the program be communicated clearly and is it fair?

–          Are expectations clear and is progress toward achievement communicated adequately?

Following these principles virtually assures a successful program with maximum participation.  It does take work and collaboration with various business teams to understand the dynamics and nuances of their business, so together they can develop programs aimed at driving behaviors that generate optimal results.

For more information about JNR and how we help companies design and execute successful incentive programs, feel free to give us a call at 800.343.4546.  That’s what we’re here for and what we do every day.

Mexican Travel Spotlight: Top Destinations

Few locations rival the country of Mexico in the realm of incentive travel and corporate meeting planning. With an abundance of world class resorts offering thousands of square feet of meeting space and services ranging from renowned spas and championship golf courses to crystal clear waters along private beaches, Mexico is truly an enticing destination for any company to consider for its next reward trip.

Mexico is an ideal locale due to its close proximity to the United States, easing the hassle of transportation and facilitating a worry free trip for a firm with an inclination for organizing an international program. Throughout the years, JNR has enjoyed several successful incentive trips to Mexico, and with its hospitable accommodations and excellent weather, it is a destination that is continually on the radar for an increasing number of clients.

One of Mexico’s most outstanding benefits is its privileged coastline on both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, providing multiple options for 5-star lodging for both west coast and east coast companies with an eye for this beautiful country. JNR has been fortunate enough to operate programs in some of the most exceptional Mexican locations, highlighted by Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, and the stunning Riviera Maya.

Puerto Vallarta: Puerto Vallarta is a coastal town on the Bay of Banderas on the Pacific side of Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is a unique blend of landscapes for visitors to the city.  Hiking through a rainforest or lush jungle in the morning and relaxing on the golden sands  in the afternoon is all possible within the same day. Puerto Vallarta has become a tremendously popular vacation spot in recent years, as the number of gourmet eateries, boutique shops and remarkable accommodations has exponentially risen to accompany the colonial and historic vibe that the city is founded upon.

Cabo San Lucas: Los Cabos or Cabo San Lucas is a lively and energetic resort area on the tip of the Baja California Peninsula. With over 20 miles of white sand beaches, Cabo San Lucas is a wonderful destination for beautiful resorts and water activity aficionados. The turquoise blue waters and famous sea arches are a perfect location for sport fishing, wave running or whale watching, giving any company a plethora of options for its guest’s activities.  For the land dwellers, Cabo San Lucas has a lively night scene as well as multiple old town shopping experiences from vivacious downtown Cabo to the quieter San Jose del Cabo.

Cancun: Cancun is a world famous tourist destination on the Yucatan Peninsula that does not disappoint with its glamorous beaches, first class all inclusive resorts, modern attractions, and exuberant nightlife. Cancun has been on the map as a gorgeous destination year round with its ideal weather and surplus of distinguished hotels and spas. While it is known for being a spring break oasis, Cancun has a multitude of space for higher end travel and a large airport that allows for ease of travel in and out of the United States, as well as its proximity to the luxurious Isla Mujeres and historical Chichen Itza.

Riviera Maya: The Riviera Maya is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the entire country of Mexico. Straddling Highway 307 along the Caribbean Sea, the Riviera Maya encompasses some of the most striking locations including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Xel-Ha, and Xcaret which boast arguably the best beaches in the world.  The Riviera Maya also includes the Island of Cozumel, which is celebrated for its reef where snorkeling and scuba diving adventures abound. The Riviera Maya is a first-rate location for international programs as this shoreline hosts more all inclusive resorts than any other region in the country and is close to the ruins of ancient Mayan civilization.

Mexico is a year round playground for sunshine and adventure, and in recent years it has become a mecca for corporate travel. JNR is no exception and has been going south of the border for both large corporate meetings and action packed incentives as Mexico meets multiple needs when planning any type of program. The international value for the domestic price tag cannot be beat, and Mexico continues to dazzle its guests, leaving any visitor to the country wanting to come back for more of its hospitality. For inquiries into setting up your own corporate program to any of these fantastic sites, visit JNR Inc for more information.

The Importance of On-Site Staff to Meetings, Events and Incentive Travel – Part Three

Today concludes our informative three part series on The Importance of On-Site Staff to Meetings, Events and Incentive Travel. If you have not already, take a moment to read Part One and Part Two. In today’s final piece we cover the qualities to look for in a capable on-site staff member.

JNR is committed to delivering phenomenal business meetings, corporate events and incentive travel programs every time. A large part of ensuring that we deliver on this is making sure we have the right people for the job. We employ on-site expert Travel Directors that we like to call your “insurance policy.” They make sure the event runs smoothly, keep costs in check and they send participants and clients home happy. A solid team of on-site logistical staff is crucial to any event’s success.

When hiring on-site staff members, JNR looks for certain attributes, skills and qualities in a potential employee. These are often elements that cannot be taught.

Hardworking

On-site staff members must be disciplined enough to work incredibly hard. They are the first to rise and the last to rest. They have an array of intricate tasks that must be completed before participants arrive, seemingly impossible tasks while the event is running, respond to individual needs as well as the entire group’s needs, and, as participants are heading home, they stay to make sure everyone has checked out, have rides to the airport, and arrange for any outgoing shipments. Amidst it all, they make sure all billing notes are in order.

Responsive

The first thing you learn on-site is that things change. Our expert Travel Directors expect that there are factors that are out of their control and that they must remain flexible and on their toes in order to keep the event on track. Whether it is a travel delay, inclement weather or a key item that will not be delivered on time, they work on finding solutions rather than getting stuck on problems. They also keenly anticipate complications arising before they actually happen and prepare accordingly. This is fondly referred to as avoiding Murphy. When factors do not go as planned, most of the time, they are solved so efficiently that participants remain blissfully unaware.

Teamwork

On-site staff members are given key responsibilities and are empowered to jump in where needed to help other staff members. While they work in their own specialty areas, they know that at the end of the day the program as a whole is the big picture and that they need to work together for it to be successful – no task is solely one person’s duty. Members of the on-site team know what each other are working on and come together to help with all things from finishing touches to more complicated elements.

Positive Attitude

On-site experts work grueling hours, have multiple jobs on their plates at once and respond to client and participant requests at any hour of the day – all with a smile on their face. Even if an event throws curve ball after curve ball, having the right attitude with a passion for delivering their best can be the difference between an average event and an incredible event. Our on-site staff members see the big picture and work diligently towards that rather than getting stuck on components that do not go as planned.

Ability to Understand the Client’s Objectives

Travel Directors must be fully aware and understand the client’s objectives to deliver a successful meeting, event or travel program. Once goals and objectives have been explained to on-site staff members, they know what elements will deliver on these goals. They are conscientious of how to use their skill sets to direct a meeting, event or travel program in the direction the client wants.

Communication and Negotiation Skills

At any one time, Travel Directors will be in communication and negotiation with multiple parties. They rely on third parties to deliver exactly what is expected of them and must therefore communicate what is needed in an efficient manner. They use their strong negotiation skills to get the best outcomes and value for the client, all while keeping a positive relationship with the vendor for future programs.

Communication with participants can truly enhance the program. We often hear that our client was impressed with our team, how nice it was that participants knew the on-site staff members by name and how wonderfully they were treated.

On-site staff members are unique individuals that are driven to deliver above what is expected of them. With a trained eye and a thorough understanding of “back-of-the-house” operations, our experienced on-site travel management professionals direct the logistics of your event, leaving you free to attend to VIP’s, participants and the actual program content. You can focus on just one thing… your business.

To find out how JNR can help orchestrate an amazing meeting, event or incentive travel program, please call us on 949.476.2788 or email us at jnrinfo@jnrcorp.com. We would love to work with you on your next program.
