Employee Incentives at JNR

Working with an incentive travel company you may imagine that JNR employees get the opportunity for luxurious jet setting to remote locations while receiving perks from fabulous hotels and travel vendors. We however, are the ones working behind the scenes planning, negotiating and operating those programs to ensure our clients experience the trip of a lifetime that will have lasting effects of sustained motivation amongst their employees. For those of us left in the office, JNR does give employees several other opportunities to feel incentivized, appreciated and connected to the company culture.

In today’s age of millennial workers, the need to feel appreciated and socially engaged is more important than ever. Work life balance is one of the most sought after perks of a job in today’s culture. Paid time off and a generous 401K plan is not enough to make an employee feel like a valued member of a team. There are several other ways to keep employees feeling appreciated, engaged in their work and loyal to their employers.

Here are three ways JNR incentivizes our employees:

  1. Pre-paid debit cards

At the end of each quarter, JNR employees who receive a “Caught in the Act” recognition from their peers or managers will receive a bonus of $25.00 each on their personalized prepaid debit card. A “Caught in the Act” recognizes an employee for several acts of service. From going above and beyond what is asked, staying late to get the job done or taking on a big project proactively. This is an excellent example of not only verbally praising employees for a job well done, but also giving them an extra monetary incentive to keep up the good work.

  1. In-office parties and celebrations

At JNR you can have your cake and eat it too! What better way to extended appreciation to our employees than with in-office celebrations and catered events. JNR plans monthly birthday celebrations as well as fun national holidays and everything in between. From the March birthday celebration that honored national Mario Cart Day, to our summer office Olympic events, office festivities give employees the opportunity to take a break from their desk and come socialize, play a game and enjoy sweet treats in camaraderie with their coworkers.

  1. Referral program

When current employees refer a friend or acquaintance to JNR for an open position they are rewarded monetarily if the candidate is a good fit. The employee who refers the candidate will receive $50.00 on their JNR reward card after 90 days, and $250.00 after they complete their first year with the company. This is a great way to encourage familiar referrals and maintains the integrity of the applicants.

These perks are just a few little ways that JNR makes employees feel like they are part of a collaborative team. Incentives like these guarantee higher retention rates which is most cost efficient for the company.  When employees feel valued it is directly reflected in company moral. At JNR it is easy to discover the difference in our employees, our work and our service. Contact us today if you are interested in pursuing an employee engagement program for your organization.

Enticing Mexican Festivities

Mexico is a destination that never disappoints and remains a top pick for Incentive Travel programs at all levels. With a range of hotel, resort and all-inclusive choices and ample activities, this destination has a charm that appeals to every demographic.

We create an authentic, luxury experience for our participants by offering a list of little known Mexican festivities that you may want to consider when booking your next Incentive trip in Mexico.

Carnival

Although you may tend to think of Rio for Carnival, Mexico has it’s own version of Carnival celebrations that take place the last week of February every year. If you want to see an authentic Mexican Carnival event head to Mazitlan where you will find thousands taking to the streets in elaborate costumes.  The weeklong fête includes parades, balls and merriment going well into the early morning hours.

Dia de la Candelaria

The Dia de la Candelaria is celebrated each February 2nd across the county.  This gorgeous celebration is festooned with thousands candles and flowers of every color.  Families bring a dressed up baby Jesus as an offering of thanks for a blessed year.  In pre-Hispanic times, villagers would bring corn through the streets on February 2nd according to the Mayan calendar in exchange for a healthy harvest.

If you are lucky enough to be in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz at this time, you will see this festival complete, parades and delicious tamales.

Fiesta de Santa Cecilia

An entire festival centered on the patron saint of music is bound to be a great time! Every November in Mexico City, Plaza Garibaldi is transformed into an open-air party with various music styles playing throughout the day.  This party culminates with more than 500 musicians from all backgrounds singing Las Mañantas to the patroness of mariachis.  While in Mexico City, we recommend staying at Four Seasons Hotel Mexico, D.F. , The St. Regis Mexico City or any of the luxury resorts where you will experience the finest accommodations and service.

BPM Festival

And speaking of music, the BPM festival in Playa del Carmen kicks off each New Year with the largest dance music festival in the world.  Thousands of visitors travel to the area every year to take part in dance parties on one of the countries most beautiful Caribbean shorelines.  For a span of 10 days, festivalgoers enjoy 400 artists all while taking in the splendor of Riviera Maya.

From Cancun to Los Cabos, Mexico is a country of great heritage and an endless source of fascination for travelers.  Whether you’ve been once or several times, there is always something new to discover. JNR will incorporate authentic touches into your next Incentive program in Mexico or anywhere in the world you would like to go.

Key Trends from the 2016 Incentive Marketplace Study

Melissa Van Dyke of the Incentive Research Federation (IRF) took some time to talk about key trends that emerged in the 2016 Incentive Marketplace Study conducted by the IRF when she recently spoke with Meetings & Conventions. Here are the highlights:

  • As service related jobs increase, incentives will increase too.

Van Dyke talks about how the majority of jobs in America are service or experience related and this trend is set to continue. What is important here is that employees in these positions need to be engaged to be successful at their jobs.  To keep them engaged employers need to look beyond traditional compensation. This is why non-cash incentives have grown from being used in 26% of businesses to 84% of businesses over the last 20 years. As more and more of these jobs are created, the demand for Incentive programs will continue to increase.

  • Companies are spending more on incentive programs.

Companies are realizing there is a certain amount of money that needs to be invested in an incentive program in order to see a return. For example, there is no point in running a program with a small or non-existent communications budget. A strong communication campaign is directly correlated to the success of an Incentive.  Communication pieces are how participants learn about the program and get excited to be a part of it. If you are going to run an incentive program, it needs to be done right, and preferably by experts. The increase in spend can be seen in all areas of Incentive Travel including employees, channel partners, salespeople and customers.

  • Programs need to change with the changing workforce.

Van Dyke talks about how Millennials surpassed Generation X in the workforce in 2015 and how that changes the way that an Incentive Travel program should be designed. Innovative technology that keeps these participants connect is now a must and experiential travel is more important than a “traditional desire for luxury brands”.

These are all trends we have been proactive in offering at JNR. With over 36 years of experience in the industry and a passion for delivering programs that are tailored to your individual company’s goals and needs we know that a partnership with JNR is a great fit for you!

Put Cash in The Past

The idea of cash is alluring – it is flexible and it gives you the freedom to purchase anything. Who couldn’t use a little extra cash? However recent studies have shown that in terms of incentives, cash may not be the most effective and engaging reward for long term results.

Contrary to popular belief, the 2015 Landmark Survey shows that when given the option, employees did not automatically choose cash as part of their reward. “The study found that on average the most preferred award experience for large awards is a travel award, presented by travel executives, communicated in a public announcement, and combined with the opportunity for special networking” (Van Dyke).  This is good to know since companies are spending $77B on non-cash awards annually!

While cash rewards provide you with the ability to buy anything you want, The Economic Theory suggests that people are more likely to spend cash on utilitarian items rather than something more personally gratifying (Helion and Gilovich 2014; Thaler 1985). Once the cash is spent, the gratitude tends to go with it.  When employees are provided with an experience such as a bucket list trip of a lifetime, they are able to take away priceless memories while having the opportunity to strengthen their relationships with their coworkers and executive leadership. Not to mention, a vacation is a bit more glamorous than a trip to the grocery store.

More and more we are finding that people are motivated by an experience rather than the tangible reward itself.  What is the recipient’s perceived value of the award?  How does the presentation of receiving the award make them feel?  Everyone responds differently to various incentives so to see the most favorable ROI on your program it is suggested that you craft it with levels of personalization weaving throughout.

In the future, instead of assuming that cash is the best motivator, dig a little deeper and determine what would really engage your sales team, employees or channel members.
