There is no need to explain the fast paced world we live in. You begin each morning with a cup of coffee and quickly respond to dozens of emails before heading to the first of many meetings with colleagues you see every day around the office. However, did you ever wonder what story the person sitting next to you has to tell? Have you asked the person in the break room where they come from? Last week, we did just that.

In honor of Immigrant Heritage Month, JNR employees took time to celebrate the individual differences that make each one of us distinctly unique.  It was quickly realized that our company not only travels the world but has a global reach within headquarter walls. Sweden, Colombia, England, Mexico, Korea, Greece, Serbia, El Salvador and Lebanon were only a few of the 44 countries represented. We also discovered that between our employees there are 11 languages fluently spoken such as Greek, Mandarin, and Tagalog. While one employee was able to trace her family lineage back to the Mayflower others had tremendous stories of struggle and determination of immigrating to the United States in search of a better life.

We must never forget what America stands for and that we are, in fact, a nation of immigrants.  Each one of us brings some piece of their heritage and culture with them and we see that in the diverse approach to our work.  At JNR we value the diversity that each one of us comes with and brings with us every day.

June is Immigrant Heritage Month, and the #IAmAnImmigrant campaign has launched to encourage all of us to explore our individual heritage & recognize our distinct and shared experiences. We all have our place in the American story, whether as a new immigrant, native to this land, a descendent of slavery or those who came to our nation seeking a better life.

This campaign began three years ago to recognize that almost all of us come from families of immigrants and, in fact, America was founded on the strength and perseverance of immigrant communities.  Now, more than ever, it is important to demonstrate how America’s diversity, fueled by immigrants and Native Americans, makes us stronger and more connected as a nation.

Throughout this month, individuals will be exploring their lineage and celebrating both diversity and our shared American heritage by telling their distinct stories, which will comprise a uniquely American narrative. What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, which honors our U.S. military men and women who died while serving our nation and protecting our freedom.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed by General John Logan on May 5, 1868 and was observed on May 30 when flowers were placed on the graves of both Civil War Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1968, Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Memorial Day is a time to enjoy the company of family and friends and to celebrate our nation’s freedom. However, it’s a lot more than a day off from school or work, it is one of the most significant holidays we have, a day of remembrance, especially if you or a family member has served our country.

Our U.S. Armed Forces go where they are sent and deserve our full support.  Memorial Day is a time to remember all those Americans who have fought in the past to keep our country safe and free. It is a day to honor and respect those who have died.

Children observe and retain far more than they are given credit for and they need to know the true meaning of this day. So, this year, while surrounded by family and friends, take a moment to teach the meaning of Memorial Day. Let children know what this holiday means to you and why it means so much to our nation’s history, and our military families. Talk and reflect on those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Spend time teaching children about patriotism and why we celebrate our nation’s freedom.  Memorial Day activities can have a long lasting impact and give young children a greater appreciation for our country. Building a sense of pride with patriotism is important!

No matter your political views, military heroes deserve our respect. There are many ways to teach children to honor our nation’s defenders.  Children know that people die and explaining that some die while bravely protecting others gives meaning.  You’ll find that children will be interested in learning about history and how important it is to recognize our heroes; to remember them with honor and respect the ultimate sacrifice they have given to protect America and our freedom.

In the morning, fly our flag proudly at half-mast, a position reserved only for days when the entire country is in mourning, and raise it high at noon to honor the living. Then gather at 3:00 PM to silently observe our National Moment of Remembrance.  When informed, kids will understand the importance of keeping quiet for this minute.

Memorial Day is about remembering those who have given their service and their lives for our country, but there are soldiers in the field right now. Thousands of American men and women soldiers are serving in danger zones overseas. Many are lonely, afraid, they miss home and the comforts of little things like magazines, snacks, personal hygiene products, paper and pens, and cheery letters and pictures. There is no better lesson in American citizenship than having a child write a letter to a deserving soldier. Think of ways to contribute to today’s veterans. Don’t allow children to think that Memorial Day is just another day off school or just another holiday. Teach children the history and importance of Memorial Day and remember our past American heroes together.  What you teach them today will make a difference tomorrow.

Bringing a CSR Element to Your Incentive

Last month Points of Light Foundation encouraged people to share their stories for National Volunteer Week.  This week was dedicated to recognizing those that volunteer their time and resources to better others in communities near and far.  Support poured in from the President, Congress, Leaders and community groups across the country.  At JNR we see first hand the impact that service projects have, not only on the recipients, but also on the volunteers themselves.

Incorporating a Community Service element into an Incentive program is a wonderful way to give back to the community that hosts your once-in-a-lifetime event. Although these Incentives are a time to celebrate the hard work of your top achievers, we have found that to give people the opportunity to spend a day bettering the lives of others further enhances the overall experience.

JNR Incorporated understands the importance of volunteerism and encourages clients to bring in an element of corporate social responsibility to their program. Corporate social responsibility, also known as CSR, refers to a business practice that involves activities that benefit a segment of society. From revamping a school in Mexico, to building a playground for children in the Caribbean, to packaging “essential packs” for families in need here in the U.S., JNR with our DMC and Tour partners make many programs meaningful for both our clients and the community with a custom CSR day.

Regardless of your approach, volunteerism is about inspiring people to find ways to help their community.  Although the experience is usually gratifying enough, week long events like National Volunteer Week recognize those who do this and give them a forum to post about their experiences and to share ideas and stories of what they have done to give back.
